View the stars from Mt. Washington
There’s nothing quite as stunningly beautiful as nature itself, especially when you’re in New Hampshire. ‘The Granite State offers crisp and unpolluted air, making it a terrific place to simply lie back and view the clear evening sky.
But New Hampshire offers far more than a clear and pristine atmosphere that’s perfect for stargazing. No, there’s Mount Washington which stands at 6,288 feet (1,917 m), making it the highest peak in the Northeastern portion of the United States. Mount Washington, the most prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River, is located in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains.
During the Victorian Era, many landscape artists found Mount Washington inspiring, often traveling great distances to neighboring Conway, New Hampshire in search of the newer and grander natural subjects. That fact alone tells visitors that this place, highly regarded for its impeccable landscape, would naturally be the perfect place to enjoy viewing the star formations all across the sky.
However, it takes a bit of practice over time to begin truly identifying the constellations. After all, there are 88 modern constellations, not including former constellations and those rooted in Chinese culture. Fortunately, though, for both amateur and more experienced star gazers, technology giant Apple now offers an award-winning app called Go Sky Watch Planetarium: The Astronomy Star Guide. App users can simply point their smartphones or tablets toward the sky, and the Apple device transforms into a personal telescope. The app quickly helps users to both locate and identify stars, constellations, planets and more.
And speaking of those inspired landscape paintings, the vast amount of works done during that time formed the basis of the New England School of Art known as, fittingly, White Mountain Art. Those paintings made their way to various venues around the world (most notably to the Royal Hampton Court in London, England). Both the storied tales of travel to the region, coupled with these stunning works of art, inspired the area’s tourism industry which remains vital today.
One of North Conway’s most unique and cozy accommodations is Stonehurst Manor. Set upon 33 acres, Stonehurst Manor was built at the turn of the century. However, this North Conway, NH Bed & Breakfast features both manor rooms and condos, with jacuzzi’s and fireplaces available in select units. This bed and breakfast also offers gourmet dining onsite, with Chef Avi Deiter and his staff featuring a full menu of mouth watering entrees.
Fashionistas will enjoy a tax-free shopping spree at nearby Settler’s Green, and New England’s top ski destinations are located very close to Stonehurst Manor. Perhaps a leisurely and romantic trip on the Conway Scenic Railroad would be the perfect way to unwind, and then of course, there’s always the breathtaking view of Mount Washington.
Although the environment is truly peaceful and relaxing, there’s always something special to do and to see at Stonehurst Manor.
