Holiday shopping has become as much a part of Thanksgiving weekend as turkey and dressing. In New Hampshire, you don’t have to fight the Black Friday crowds or settle for the same merchandise in every store. The Village of North Conway boasts dozens of shops, most of which are on or just off Main Street, with wares that include hand-knitted sweaters, original art, hand-thrown pottery, blown-glass holiday ornaments and hand-crafted wooden toys. Try getting gifts like these at the mall. One more plus about doing your holiday shopping in New Hampshire: you don’t have to wait for a tax holiday. New Hampshire doesn’t have sales tax, so shopping is tax free year round.
In addition to shopping on Main Street in North Conway, central New Hampshire offers more than 200 outlet retailers, with hard-to-beat prices on everything from shoes to cookware. Most of these are located on a strip just south of North Conway and include Aeropostale, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Coach, Eddie Bauer and Old Navy. Prices at the outlet stores are 30 to 60 percent off of retail year round. For the holidays, there are additional incentives.

Of course, eating and shopping aren’t the only things to do in central New Hampshire. The area is home to 700,000 acres of protected forest at White Mountain National Forest, the tallest peak in the eastern United States (Mount Washington), world-class skiing, historic covered bridges, Santa’s Village (in Jefferson, NH) and miles and miles of scenic hiking trails.
So, this year, toss your apron aside and allow yourself to be pampered with a Thanksgiving weekend in central New Hampshire.
