Cranmore Rocks in Spring 2010

HSRacer  cranapalooza

Incredible Snowfall Just Makes The Skiing BETTER at Cranmore!  It's been snowing off and on for most of the last week and conditions are awesome. We got well over a foot of snow in late February and the groomers have buffed the trails to make the most of it.  Be sure to be there on Saturday, March 6th for TWO great "happenings"…

The Hannes Schneider Meister Cup  This annual  fundraiser event for the New England Ski Museum honors the history of Cranmore and the legend of its founding Skimeister Hannes Schneider. Join us for a memorable day of racing, ice carving, a silent auction, a vintage ski wear contest, torch light parade, food, fireworks, and live music.

Cranapalooza  from 2pm – 8pm. This Intergalactic Cranapalooza will have live music from Dennis and Davey, FIREWORKS, and games the whole family can enjoy!

Annual Chocolate Festival Feb. 28, 2010

Known as the “Sweetest Day on the Trails", the Annual Chocolate Festival on Sunday, Feb, 28 may be the only day of the year when chocolate cravings are encouraged! Choco-holics can work off the guilt (what guilt?) while cross country skiing or snowshoeing inn-to-inn on the 65km trail system maintained by the Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring Association. Locals and visitors return year after year to enjoy the Chocolate Festival, often returning with a larger group of friends each time!

Presented as a fund-raiser by the MWVSTA, it’s exciting to see how this event has gained popularity and attendees over the past twenty years! We’ve also heard that many people mark their calendars each year and come from great distances to enjoy the spectacular scenery, warm hospitality, and great chocolate treats at stops throughout the network.

The Festival will be held rain or shine, snow or no snow. In case of inclement weather or poor trail conditions, attendees are invited to walk, drive, and shuttle between participating inns and businesses. The extended forecast predicts a chance of precipitation for several days this week. Since we’re in New England, we’ll have to wait to see what this brings. Think Snow!

Avoid the crowds and SAVE with advance online ticket purchases! Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 when purchased on Festival day at the MWVSTA Touring Center located at Ragged Mountain Equipment, Route 16 in Intervale. (Online orders received after noon on Monday, Feb 22 will be held for pick up at the Touring Center. Tickets are non-refundable. Sorry, all season pass holders must purchase the Festival Pass to indulge in the chocolate treats!)

Lots NEW in 2010! Details and descriptions can be found at www.crosscountryskinh.com/chocolatefestival

FREE XC Skiing and Snowshoeing

XCPair_Pulk    SnowshoeLady

If you like to take your time and "smell the snowflakes" when cross country skiing or snowshoeing, then the Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring Network that goes by our door is the answer. The trails are groomed and, for the most part, are on gentle terrain. You’ll glide (or clump) through forests and fields and along the sparkling Saco River… or you could head into North Conway Village for lunch at The Stairway Café (across from the park) or The Courtyard Café (downstairs from Olympia Sports). And, there’s always time for a little shopping!

Best of all, skiing from our door is FREE when you’re a guest at The Manor for a minimum of two nights (double occupancy) anytime this winterOur rates are always in season and we invite you to experience the spectacular beauty of Mt. Washington Valley from the "slow lane". When your day is done, come sit by the fire in the Library Lounge and sip a hot drink or your favorite libation… does it get any better than that? Well, maybe… dinner starts serving at 5:30pm!

2009 Polar Express in North Conway

PolarExpress_BookCvr   PolExElves

DO YOU BELIEVE?  That’s the question many parents ask as the Christmas Season approaches. While children grow and change, they certainly believe in getting presents but do they still believe in Santa, the Elves, the Eight Tiny Reindeer, the North Pole?

Answers can be found for both parents and children as they ride “The Polar Express” entraining from North Conway’s Victorian Train Station. Based on Chris Van Allsburg’s classic and beautifully illustrated story, this immensely popular annual event is the hottest (hardest to get) ticket in the Valley and not to be missed!

The Manor has Polar Express tickets for four weekends and strongly suggests calling NOW to make reservations. We offer several all-inclusive packages… details are available at www.stonehurstmanor.com/polar_express_package.html

Wear your pajamas, hot chocolate is served, and lots of Elves will greet you at the “North Pole”. Will you meet Santa? Can you hear the bells? We can’t say but when you return, WILL YOU BELIEVE?

Autumn Attire in the White Mountains

Foliage_Water   Leaves

Every year from late September through October, the White Mountains go into their “fashion mode” and decide to deck themselves out in their gaudiest finery for all to see. And, what a show! From every vantage point, whether driving, hiking or biking, you’ll see LOTS of color… the reds, oranges, yellows and russets of maples, birches, oaks and sumac set against the dark greens of tall, stately pines. On clear days, when the sky is impossibly blue, this panorama of vibrant color just shimmers before your eyes. You can’t help but be totally amazed by this earthly miracle. Forget all the scientific explanations… it’s just plain GORGEOUS!

As for YOUR attire in the autumnal season, any fashion choice of sweaters, fleece vests and waterproof jackets are in order even if the temperatures are warm during the day. It’s New England after all and you never know when the weather is going to change! Packing for all contingencies is especially important if you’re hking or biking in the hills. Above certain elevations or even on Main Street, there’s always a possibility of snow or icy rain at a moment’s notice. So, be a good scout and come prepared!

A collection of foliage season photographs can be found at http://bobgrantphotography.com/fall_summer.htm. Bob’s been "shooting the Valley" for years and has created a fantastic visual history of the area. Check it out!

Weather forecasts for the North Conway area can be found at http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?zoneid=NHZ004. Type in The Manor’s zip code — 03860 — and hit GO. Voila! A detailed run-down of what to expect weather-wise while visiting Mt. Washington Valley and Stonehurst Manor! No guarantees but…

“Shop-portunities” in North Conway

One of the most popular activities close to Stonehurst
Manor that many of our guests enjoy is SHOPPING!

NCVillageShop_Zebs   NCVillShop_SpruceHurr
Over the years, Mt. Washington Valley has become famous as one of the great shopping meccas in New England… and for good reason. With nearly 100 top-name outlets and lots of locally owned specialty shops, you could spend DAYS here and not see everything. Best of all, New Hampshire shopping is 100% Tax-Free!

North Conway Village is a quintessential New England town center less than 5 minutes from the Manor’s door. Offering a delighful selection of specialty shops, galleries and restaurants, you can walk to everything along the main and side streets. Schouler Park is the heart of the village and is a great spot for a picnic or people watching.
Note: Cars are required to stop for pedestrians in the marked Village crosswalks; our only stoplight is timed. Jay walkers are, frankly, a danger to themselves and to motorists. Please use the marked brick crosswalks for your own safety. We want you to get back to the Manor safe and sound for dinner!

Just a 10 minute drive from the Manor, Settlers’ Green Outlet Village offers over 60 stores in two convenient settings on either side of Route 16 about two miles south of North Conway Village. They also have a children’s playground, seasonal events, entertainment and fun family dining choices.
