Welcome to Stonehurst Manor

The staff of Stonehurst Manor invites you to enjoy the luxury of this elegant, turn-of-the-century Victorian mansion. Set on 33 rolling acres, the manor offers a White Mountain vacation that is truly unique. From our exceptional mountain views to the peace and quiet of the Library Lounge, you’ll be surrounded by beauty and comfort.

Secluded atop a hillside among tall pines, The Stonehurst Manor seems miles away from the bustling downtown village of North Conway. Offering 25 guest rooms and one of the most popular restaurants in the Mount Washington Valley, the Manor is reputed to be the area’s foremost example of Victorian rural elegance.

The Manor was originally built as the summer estate of carpet baron Erastus Bigelow, founder of Bigelow Carpets – at one time, the largest carpet manufacturing company in the world. The estate was comprised of 500 Acres, serving the Bigelow’s as a working farm, which stretched from the Manor house itself all the way to the Saco River. The original property included a cottage for the gatekeeper, large stables, and servant’s house…. Many of these building are still intact today.

At his death, the property was inherited by Erastus’ only daughter, Helen Bigelow Merriman, who is responsible for the current “English Country Manor” style you see here today… a front door large enough to drive through, hand carved English oak woodwork, leaded glass windows, a multitude of stone fireplaces throughout the Manor, the spacious gardens, a screened tile veranda and the imposing stone Porte cochere.

As recognized in America’s Who’s Who of 1903-1905, we know that Helen was the wife of a prominent English Minister and that she was known as an artist and writer in her day. Merriman began the Manor’s tradition of offering hospitality “in the grand manner.” Here she entertained guests from around the world, who were brought up the long drive from the Intervale train station by a team of four bay horses and coach!

Her hospitality and generosity to both her guests and the North Conway community are legendary. Sadly, when she died in 1933 at the age of 89, the original 500-acre estate was broken up and sold. The Manor of today has been operated as an Inn since the 1940’s continuing the tradition of hospitality.

The Manor is located in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire, just one mile beyond North Conway Village on Route 16. It is convenient to major highways in all directions and daily air service is available to and from Portland, Maine (1.5 hours), Manchester, New Hampshire (2 hours) or Logan International Airport in Boston (3 hours). Car rental services are available from all these airports.
