Spreading across Northern New Hampshire and into Maine is New England's most mountainous region, the White Mountains. Named for the blanket of snow that covers the tallest peaks almost year 'round, they are dominated by 6,288-ft. Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast. The White Mountains are primarily granite and are characterized by their rounded summits, deep broad valleys, and U-shaped passes called "notches". Through these notches flow crystal clear, rushing rivers famous for the exciting canoeing and kayaking experiences they provide. Pristine lakes and ponds also offer exceptional opportunities to view the area's abundant wildlife. You could meet a moose, see a beaver dam, or surprise a family of deer at almost every turn of the trail or stream |
